Ben Johnson
He frustrates me so much with his distribution when defending. Worryingly, it's not improving. If he's going to get anywhere near his potential, he needs to sort that out.,

Re: Ben Johnson
Strangely Johnson seems better crossing from the left wing with his left foot, than he does using his right foot. I see him as an effective left wing back, which leaves Cresswell to concentrate on defensive duties. Right back is more of a problem right now.

Seems like he'll be playing center back from now, if Norf is correct

Yep, said as much a little while ago, the lad looks the real deal, apparently Moyes is a big fan.

Only problem is he has seemed a bit injury prone, let's hope that isn't an ongoing thing

Re: Ben Johnson
I don't see much difference between Johnson and Coufal tbh.
Coufal is experienced but lacks pace, works well with Soucek defensively down the right. Johnson has more pace and can run better with the ball. For someone who was "shit" against Burnley he still put in a better cross than Cresswell from open play. I can't remember the last time Cresswell put in a decent cross from open play. He checks his run a thousand time more than Johnson.
Coufal was rested for Burnley. I would of thought he needed another game then a week off, strange.
So who's first choice v Frankfurt ? Whoever plays against Chelsea I would presume will be left out against Frankfurt.
I'm more worried our left back position.

Re: Ben Johnson
It’s all opinions but I think Johnson will continue to improve and become a very good right back. It’s first full season, he has the defensive strength and is good in the air. He will improve in the attacking part of his game with more coaching. In short, he will improve and get consistency but it may take another season or two. IMO:-)

Re: Ben Johnson
I saw enough of Ashby at Spurs in the cup game to convince me he will be the long term solution at right back .

Re: Ben Johnson
The lad is a good honest pro with an outstanding attitude, who covers both flanks mostly competently which is rare as hens teeth these days, and could end cover centre half in a real emergency. He'll never be a world beater, or 1st choice for an extended period, but he'll be a good player for the club.

Re: Ben Johnson
I’m more than happy for our back up right and left back to simply be good defensively. Its a whole lot better than the bloke who is supposed to be back up left back, who is absolutely shit at everything. Johnson is a decent option who can cover a couple of roles wthout being a world beater. I don’t think anyone is expecting him to be.

Re: Ben Johnson
Saw an interview with Coufal where he said he had been restricted with that injury all season and only after the surgery did he feel freedom of movement.
He was obviously rested after his first 90mins on Thursday but will surely come back to add that extra attacking option on the right for the big upcoming matches.

Sven Roeder 10:42 ~

I think you've hit the nail on the head there
Ben Johnson is still young and there are several aspects of his game that need to be improved upon
His defending is generally good but he's a little inconsistent at times
The biggest problem is when we're attacking. He always plays the ball back or tries to cut inside when we're in a good attacking position and the opposition know exactly what he's going to do, it's too predictable!
He needs to practice bombing down the outside and whipping accurate crosses in if he wants to improve his game
I would rather have a fit Coufal playing every time at present
I know Coufal hasn't been at his best apart from the Lyon game, but it's all too obvious that the groin injury he sustained against Man U knocked him back

Sven Roeder 10:42 Mon Apr 18
Re: Ben Johnson
He is going to be a useful player especially being able to play both sides but his instincts are basically defensive.
His positioning and first thought was always to pass back inside and that is something he needs to work on.
After a few weeks out obviously wasnt thought that Coufal was up to Thursday / Sunday but suspect after a free week he will be back in for the rest of the season.

Tony Gale seemed to have it in for Ben Johnson on the commentary yesterday. Whereas Galey believes Manuel Lanzini walks on water

Re: Ben Johnson
How is Johnson supposed to learn when most on here expect him to know it all already?

Let the kid make his mistakes and be dragged out of them by our seasoned pros being more clinical so he’s not such a let down to you all when he’s learning his trade as a full back…..

Nobody knows what he is, himself included. It's very strange.

So is he a better left back ?

Re: Ben Johnson
There was quite a lot of space in front of Johnson in the 2nd half which he could have exposed but chose quite often not to. His starting position is just very defensive. Seems like a centre back playing right back rather than a fullback in this modern era.

Sir Alf 1:23 Mon Apr 18
Re: Ben Johnson
Burnley sat deep with 2 banks/ blocks of 4 and 5 respectively while pressing high as they could to try and deny us space. Completely different to Lyon who were trying to take the game to us and left a lot of space to attack in.

Johnson, Bowen, Antonio etc had so much more room and space against Lyon which is why we were so effective. In other words, playing against Lyon suited our strength which is counter attacking.

So it's fine to point out the weaknesses of Vlasic and Benny, but not Johnson? Look on the match thread. Posters were pleading with Moyes to hook him.

Is it okay to criticise him now? Constantly gave the ball away.

What a pathetic thread...with an even more pathetic follow up.

Re: Ben Johnson
He is a youngster who is very much a confidence player at the moment. Will have good games and not so good games, but he doesn't hide and will get better.
